About Dealership Services

Dealership Services is responsible for processing title and tag work for the following:

  • All Dealerships selling automobiles to Chatham County residents.
  • Tag and title service companies registered to do business in Chatham County (transactions are processed for Chatham County residents only).
  • Chatham County businesses with multiple fleet vehicles. (Businesses with more than ten fleet transactions must drop off documents to Dealership Services).

Appointment for Dealership Services

All in-person transactions for emergency Dealer Services are by appointment only. Drop-off transactions are accepted any time without an appointment.

  • Dealerships, Fleet companies, and Tag/Title Services companies may schedule only one appointment per day.
  • Dealerships, Fleet companies, and Tag/Title Services companies may process up to five license plate issuances, ten renewals and one title transaction.
  • During the appointment, the representative must wait while the transaction is processed. If you leave, the transaction will be considered a drop-off and will be date stamped.


Title Processing

The following is required from Dealers when processing title work

Incomplete paperwork will be returned to the dealership for correction.


ETR Exceptions

Certain transactions will continue to be processed directly through Dealership Services rather than ETR. These include transactions that are exempt from TAVT:

  • Title applications for certain disabled veterans and non-resident service members
  • Trucks and charter buses registering under the International Registration Plan (IRP)
  • Vehicles purchased by government entities
  • Loaner vehicles
  • Vehicles titled in a dealer’s name


Payment Information

  • We accept checks, cashier's checks and money orders showing the selling dealership as the remitter and credit cards in the dealership's name (for in-person appointments only).
  • We do not accept personal checks or personal credit cards as payment for dealership transactions.
  • Make all checks payable to "Chatham County Tax Commissioner."
  • Applications not having the correct payment amount will be returned.
